Orientation and Mobility Solutions

There are a number of different ways a person who is blind or vision impaired can become mobile. Your Community Resource Worker will discuss various mobility solutions with you should this be an area you are having difficulties with. Orientation and Mobility training is available from our mobility officers across the country. We can give you the opportunity to be independent and autonomous, by equipping you with the skills to orientate and mobilise in any environment.

  • Unaided mobility: independent travel without use of a mobility aid such as a long cane.
  • Symbol Cane: this is a cane used to indicate to other people that the user has low vision, which can be helpful when crossing roads or in a crowded environment. You can order a symbol cane for free through your Community Resource Worker.
  • Long Cane: this is a mobility aid to inform the user about their environment, enabling them to travel independently. The person must receive mobility training in order to use a long cane. Please see the video here
  • Guide Dog: this is suitable for some people who have the skills and desire to travel independently with the help of a guide dog. The person must receive guide mobility training in order to use a guide dog. In Ireland, this training is provided by Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.

“The diagnosis changed my life. I lost my sight quickly resulting in me giving up my job which I loved. I became socially isolated as I didn’t have the confidence to go out and about. Since finding NCBI I have been able to regain my confidence and independence by doing long cane training and daily living skills. I now see my cane as my best friend as it has liberated me.” Deirdre
