Now that we’re in April, it’s only a few short months to NCBI’s wonderful Camino from the 8th to the 15th September.
Here are some tips and hints from Camino Consultant, Shenda O’ Hare, from ‘Follow The Camino’ to get you thinking of your wonderful adventure!
You have to try the famous Tarte De Santiago, a gorgeous moist almond tart that is synonymous with the Camino. One of the best can be got from the Benedictine Nuns who graciously serve freshly baked and delicious tarts from their enclosed convent – Royal Monastry, San Pelayo de Antealtares in Santiago De Compostela.
Try the Churros and hot chocolate…. So good.
Further back on the route, in Melide, try the delicious Octopus, the areas’ speciality. Also Café Estilo is a great place to try the pastries.
Portomarin is interesting as this town was actually moved from lower ground up to its current position in 1962 when the dam was built to create the reservoir that you will cross by bridge to get to Portomarin. A typical dish to try here is eel!
In Palas de Reithere is a large dairy industry and they are known for their Ulloa cheese.
Arzua is also known for its cheese.
Near Ventas de Naron, which is on the way from Portomartin to Palas de Rei, there is the hamlet of Castromaior where you have the change to take a detour to see the ruins of an historical Celtic settlement. The is a sign pointing you to this detour which is well worth taking.
Buen Camino!
